The difference between dyes and pigments

A pigment is a colored fine powder substance that is insoluble in a water or oil medium. It can be evenly spread to form a layer of color on the surface of an object to display a certain color. Pigments should have adequate hiding power, high tinting dispersion, vivid colors, strength and light stability. Depending on the source, they are divided into natural and synthetic pigments.

The difference between a pigment and a contrast agent is that the dye is soluble in the medium, and the item is fully dyed; the pigment is insoluble in the medium and is colored only on its surface.

Pigments are an essential raw material in the paint manufacturing process. It can provide the coats of paint with a certain hiding power, increase color and protection, and compensate for any flaws the paint may have. Not just that, but it can also improve the strength of the coats, preventing ultraviolet light penetration. It also further promotes the anti-aging effects of said coats. A range of different pigments have a variety of different uses.

In the coating industry, color pigments improve durability, weather resistance, abrasion resistance and other properties in addition to the required color and hiding properties.

Pigment antioxidants are mainly used to prevent metal rusting. In the atmosphere, especially in humid environments or even corrosive gases, steel is prone to rust and corrosion, and in severe cases, structural damage or even use. In order to prevent metal rusting, there are many methods, such as porcelain coating, galvanizing, etc., in which the use of paint is a relatively simple and common method. Pigments used with good rust resistance are: red dan, red, iron zinc yellow, barium metaborate, calcium silver yellow and so on.

In addition, according to the object or medium to be used, it is possible to select pigments with different properties, such as calcium lead, aluminum powder, yellow l, etc., which can be used as high temperature resistant pigments, such as mercury oxide for marine anti-fouling paint. Copper(I) oxide is used as an anti-fouling agent.

Heat sensitive pigments (i.e., retrograde pigments change color) can be used to make heat sensitive paint to gauge the temperature of engines and other machines that are not easily measured for monitoring changes in temperature.

Luminous and fluorescent pigments are mainly used for national defense, instrument scaling and various specialized signs; while gold and silver powder also make the painted items beautiful and radiant.

In other industrial sectors, pigments are also used in large quantities, such as the printing, rubber, plastic, synthetic fibers, and paper industries. Therefore, pigments are used extensively.
